Synergistic moisturizing effect of a cellulose nanofibril/hyaluronic acid/poly-γ-glutamic acid blend system
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract To address the growing demand for green and clean beauty in the cosmetics industry, this study proposes cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-based blend systems as highly moisturizing materials for cosmetics applications. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN), hyaluronic acid (HA), and poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA), which are natural polymers, were blended, and their water retention ability and rheological properties were investigated. Among three raw materials, HA exhibited the highest viscosity; however, within the 40% input range used in this study, the thickening effect of the blend composite was not significant. The system blending TOCN with HA at 20 pph and γ-PGA at 20 pph was the most effective in enhancing water-holding performance. High-pressure homogenization treatment enhanced the moisture retention of the blended system by improving the dispersion of the components. The mechanism of the moistening effect was revealed by evaluating the drying behavior and microstructure of the hydrogel. In addition, an in vitro test confirmed that the blending system promoted the expression of genes related to skin moisturization. Graphical abstract
