In-plane polarization induced ferroelectrovalley in a two-dimensional rare-earth halide
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract We propose a mechanism where the valley splitting is caused by an in-plane polarization and is therefore coupled with it, making it possible to control the valley degree of freedom electrically. We show, by first-principles calculations, that the Eu 2 GdCl 6 monolayer (ML) exhibits an in-plane polarization coupled with a spontaneous valley splitting. Thus, unlike the conventional magnetic field switching of the valley degree of freedom, the valley polarization can be switched by an external electric field. We show that a similar ferroelectric-ferrovalley (FE) coupling is also seen in the previously reported FE (CrBr 3 ) 2 Li ML.

34. The pristine 1T monolayer has the space group P 3―m1 which includes the symmetry elements: 3― rotoinversion around z-axis which is the generator of C3 rotational symmetry, horizontal mirror plane (σh) within ab plane, three vertical mirror planes (σv) spaced by 120∘, and an inversion center (i). Thus, the system not only has a C3 rotational symmetry which normally leads to 120∘ ferroelectric domains, but it also has the inversion center and three vertical mirror planes (σv), one of which (ac-plane) is retained in the distorted ferroelectric structure with space group Cm.
35. We note that Eu2GdI6 doesn’t give rise to an electric polarization as we demonstrate for Eu2GdCl6 here.
