Abstract

Abstract Shaped catalysts are crucial for technological applications. In this context, we have developed Co–αAl2O3 catalyst films deposited over Cu plates to be used in hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of sodium borohydride NaBH4 in alkaline solution. The Co–αAl2O3 films were prepared by electrophoretic deposition according to six different routes. While five of them failed in fabricating adhering films, the sixth route, consisting of electrodepositing Co-impregnated αAl2O3, showed promising results. The as-obtained shaped catalysts were stable when hydrogen vigorously bubbled and catalyzed the NaBH4 hydrolysis with attractive hydrogen generation rates. These results open an alternative route for preparing shaped catalysts in this reaction.

9. The term ‘support’ is often used to define both the support of a supported catalyst like e.g. in Co–Al2O3 and the substrate on which a metal or a ceramic can be electrophoretically deposited. In the present study, the term ‘support’ defines the catalyst support, that is, e.g. Al2O3 for Co–Al2O3, and the term ‘substrate’ is used for the substrate on which Co–Al2O3 is deposited, that is, the Cu plate.

23. The experimental conditions for determining the species mobility were as follows. A slurry like that described in Section 2.2 was prepared. At 5.5V (i.e. an electric field E of 5.5Vcm−1) for 300s (i.e. t), 55mg of αAl2O3 or 48mg of Co was deposited over a Cu substrate (with an area A of 4cm2). The species mobility μe (cm2V−1s−1) was compared using the Hamaker equation m=μe.CAEt, with m the weight of material deposited by EPD in g and C the solid concentration in gcm−3.
