Abstract

In this study, a BiFeO3 (BFO) with different crystal phase purities was prepared through a one-pot hydrothermal process by varying the mineralizer-type KOH and NaOH. Typically, pure BFO is prepared using a KOH mineralizer, whereas mixed BFO (m-BFO) with other secondary phases, including Bi2O3 and Bi12Fe4O9, is prepared using a NaOH mineralizer. The structural, morphological, physicochemical, and optical characteristics of the BFO catalysts were investigated using several analytical techniques. The photocatalytic performances of pure BFO and m-BFO in the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) were evaluated. The results showed that m-BFO had outstanding photocatalytic degradation performance (92%) for 4-NP compared to typical pure BFO (22%). The better photocatalytic efficiency of m-BFO is due to the construction of a dual-heterojunction Z-scheme within the structure of m-BFO and due to creation of the abundant surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs).
