Abstract

Abstract The concentrations of Sn on the rolling surface ( S N ), the perpendicular to transversal direction surface ( S T ) and the perpendicular to rolling direction surface ( S R ) of Zircaloy-4 (Zr−Sn alloy) and B alloy (Zr−Sn−Nb alloy) specimens which possess similar texture structure were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) at room temperature, 773 and 873 K, respectively. The results show that surface segregation of Sn on surfaces of Zircaloy-4 specimens at 773, 873 K and B alloy specimens at 873 K is anisotropic due to the difference of surface energy among S N , S T and S R surfaces. The level of Sn surface segregation for B alloy specimens is much higher than that for Zircaloy-4 specimens at 873 K although the Sn content of B alloy is lower than Zircaloy-4. It is suggested that the surface segregation of Sn is enhanced by Nb in α-Zr matrix. And that is verified by the results of the heat of mixing of Zr 53 Sn 1 and Zr 52 Sn 1 Nb 1 models calculated by density functional theory (DFT).
