Abstract

Abstract Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have recently emerged as one of the favored contenders for large-scale energy storage systems due to the low-cost and resource-abundance of sodium. Graphite is the most successful anodes for commercial lithium-ion batteries, but it fails to show decent property in SIBs owing to the large radius of sodium ions. Amorphous carbon represents a potential anode material for commercial SIBs. However, it is still not ideal to boost the performance of SIBs for practical applications. Therefore, finding the right electrode material has become the key to developing high-performance SIBs. Here, carbon nanotubes rich in defects, high disorder, and abundant mesopores were successfully synthesized in an ethanol flame (F-CNTs). As expected, F-CNTs electrode displays a remarkable rate capability of 145 mA h g−1 at 1000 mA g−1, as well as a stable cycling life when used as SIB anodes. Indeed, this simple and massive strategy for manufacturing defect-rich CNTs and their composites used in this work is expected to be popularized in other energy storage applications.
