Abstract

Bird dropping flashover caused by trip accidents in transmission lines seriously affects the safe and stable operation of power equipment. Existing preventive measures include installing bird-preventing needles, baffles, and other facilities on the cross-arm section of transmission line towers to block and drive away birds from perching and nesting. However, tripping accidents still occur frequently. This paper proposes a new method of bird hazard prevention by applying an insulating coating on the surface of cross-arm angle steel transmission towers at ground potential to block the flashover channel of bird dropping chains. This method is long-lasting and can be applied during live coating operations while transmission lines are in normal operation, thereby opening up a new approach to bird hazard prevention. In addition, a high-insulation and corrosion-protection coating was developed using a mixture of two resins and two curing agents. After curing, the coating’s insulation performance reaches 20 kV/mm, and its corrosion protection performance meets the requirements for C4 and C5 grade heavy corrosion protection. The coating features controllable drying time and thick-film field construction, making it suitable for bird hazard prevention in transmission lines.
