An Aptamer‐Based EXACT Anticoagulant as a Sustainable, Animal‐Free Alternative to Unfractionated Heparin (Adv. Sci. 4/2026)
Source abstract
Abstract
Unfractionated Heparin A billion pigs are utilized per year to meet the world's demand for heparin, a WHO essential medicine used for many cardiovascular indications. Creating sustainable anticoagulant drugs that can replace heparin is challenging. In their Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/advs.202509867), Haixiang Yu, Bruce A. Sullenger, and co-workers describe a novel approach that employs an EXACT inhibitor to target both the EXosite and ACTive site on thrombin.
