Catastrophic Degradation in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Caused by Air Supply Interruption in Real‐World Operations: Fundamental Mechanisms and Mitigation Strategies (Adv. Sci. 3/2026)
Source abstract
Abstract
Air Shortage-Induced Degradation in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells This cover image illustrates the degradation of solid oxide fuel cells during air supply interruption. When the air blower fails, oxygen is depleted, the cathode consumes lattice oxygen, and the resulting structural collapse sets off a chain of chemical degradation events. Strontium is identified as the critical trigger of this process, and the authors design a Sr-free cathode material that successfully prevents degradation and enables stable operation.
