Origin of Carrier Types in Intrinsic Organic Semiconductors
Source abstract
Abstract
The factors determining carrier type in intrinsic organic semiconductors are clarified by measuring field-effect transistor (FET) characteristics and electronic states for an identical specimen, which is transferred between the film growth/FET measurement and electron spectroscopy chambers in situ (see figure). The FET mobility is found to decrease exponentially with the precisely evaluated charge injection barrier both for electrons and holes.

24. On the electronic states of organic semiconductors especially related to organic devices HOMO energy is defined as the threshold in most of studies because the threshold energy is the most important for the charge injection. See Ref. [9 10 12–14].
25. In delineation of band structure at the interface an optically observed gap was used here. The optical gap is not necessarily appropriate to discuss the band alignment owing to existence of exciton or other many body effects. The inverse photoemission data was not reported for AlPcCl. Based on the experimental fact shown in the following papers that the difference between the HOMO threshold and LUMO threshold is close to the optical gap for most of typical organic compounds including metal‐phthalocyanines the usage of optical gap is considered to be valid as the first order approximation.
