Abstract

Suppression of nucleation around a gold electrode during pentacene growth on a SiO2 channel is found by photoemission electron microscopy. Mass flow is driven by the difference between the molecular orientations on SiO2 and gold. The poor connectivity at the channel/electrode boundary causes degradation in the performance of a field-effect transistor, which is found to be improved by self-assembled monolayer treatment on the electrode (see figure; thickness in monolayers (ML)). 37. The number of incorporation sites is proportional to the number of pentacene molecules at the growing front. In the case of a monolayer pentacene island on the channel the number of sites amounts tol/b′ wherelis length of the groove andb′ is the width of the pentacene molecule parallel to the groove in standing configuration. On the Au electrode all the pentacene molecules adsorbed within the migration lengthλfrom the boundary act as an incorporation site; the number of sites islλ/ab whereabis the area of pentacene molecules in lying‐down mode. The ratio of incorporation site on the electrode to that of the edge of a 1 ML film is thusλb′/ab which is much higher than unity becauseλis the order of 1 μm anda b andb′ are in the order of 1 nm.
