Abstract

A study was carried out to evaluate the dust emission characteristics in the bamboo and rattan furniture manufacturing industries in Malaysia. It was found that the air-borne dust concentration increased in the order of rattan > bamboo > wood furniture manufacturing. Rattan also produced significantly higher amounts of finer dust than bamboo and wood, which can seriously affect the respiratory system of workers. Stricter dust control measures must be enforced in these industries.
