Abstract

ABSTRACT In situ exsolution of nanoparticles from perovskite is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity and stability of direct methane fuel cells (DMFCs). However, sluggish exsolution kinetics limit the formation of surface nanoparticles, leading to reduced activity and stability under coking environments. Here, we propose a strategy that tailors the B‐site tolerance to induce lattice tensile strain, thereby lowering the energy barrier for nanoparticle exsolution and achieving a 2.3–fold increase in exsolved ternary nanoparticles accompanied by abundant oxygen vacancies. Ru–containing nanoparticles significantly promote methane adsorption and activation, and the associated oxygen vacancies capture H 2 O molecules generated during fuel oxidation, thereby enabling effective “self–cleaning” of detrimental carbon deposition through water gasification. Consequently, the cell delivers a 43.1% increase in peak power density (from 1.048 W·cm −2 to 1.5 W·cm −2 ) under dry methane at 850°C and maintains stable operation for 160 h in nearly dry methane at 800°C. This strategy establishes a new paradigm for designing anodes that integrate high catalytic activity with exceptional carbon resistance in DMFCs.
