Abstract

A novel family of homogeneously para- or meta-trialkylated triindole derivatives is reported herein as p-type OSC materials. These compounds exhibit robust thermal stability, proper HOMO-LUMO energy levels and cofacial columnar packing that promote efficient charge transport. OFET devices fabricated with these compounds demonstrated hole mobilities up to 5¿×¿10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1, along with excellent switching behavior and shelf lifetimes beyond three months. This side-chain engineering enhanced molecular orientation and overall OFET operation compared to previously reported unsubstituted triindole derivatives. Additionally, charge carrier mobility within the scope systematically decreased with elongating the peripheral alkyl chain length and upon shifting from para- to meta-substitution, while OTS dielectric treatment favored peripheral shorter chains (1a,2a) and PS the longer ones (1b,c and 2b). AFM and XRD analyses supported these observations, which established a clear correlation between thin-film morphology, roughness and crystallinity with the final device performance.
