An Alginate-Based Construct for Improved Regeneration of Tissues by Angiogenesis Promotion: A Review
Source abstract
Abstract
Alginate, a natural polysaccharide, stands out for its remarkable biocompatibility and biodegradability. These properties have positioned it as a cornerstone material in tissue engineering, where it mimics the extracellular matrix and supports key cellular functions. Meanwhile, angiogenesis is one of the critical factors in determining the success of engineered tissues; therefore, modifications to alginate that promote angiogenesis are essential to the effectiveness of various tissue engineering applications. Alginate is employed in biomedical applications as a drug or cell carrier and as a substrate in tissue engineering. The alginate substrate creates a conducive environment for angiogenesis by facilitating various biological processes, such as cellular growth, migration, and differentiation, while mimicking the native extracellular matrix (ECM). Additionally, natural polymeric carriers, such as alginate, can establish optimal conditions for angiogenesis through the delivery of endothelial cells and growth factors. This study comprehensively focuses on recent advancements in the application of alginate as a biomimetic material for promoting angiogenesis in regenerative medicine. The findings demonstrate that the widespread use of alginate-based constructs as substrates or carriers has facilitated the regeneration of various tissues through angiogenesis.
