All-weather self-purification of built environments: progress and bottlenecks in long persistent phosphor-coupled photocatalysis
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract Driven by global urbanization and the carbon neutrality imperative, modern architecture is shifting to dynamic systems with active environmental remediation capabilities, with advanced semiconductor photocatalysis emerging as a primary technological pathway. However, conventional semiconductor photocatalysts rely on continuous illumination, causing a “catalytic dark period” that limits practical application. To address this, this review systematically elucidates the interfacial coupling mechanisms in long persistent phosphors (LPPs)-photocatalyst composites. It deconstructs the carrier-trap energy storage mechanism of LPPs as an internal light source and explores synergistic effects from S-scheme/Z-scheme heterojunctions that enable sustained charge separation and energy relay. Tailored for construction engineering’s harsh environments, the review proposes cross-scale design strategies, evaluating microscopic chemical and mechanical compatibility and macroscopic fabrication methods. Based on multi-scenario evaluation, it quantifies pollutant abatement efficacy for round-the-clock remediation, highlights deficiencies in current all-weather evaluation standards, and proposes structural refinements. Finally, it anticipates future directions including broad-spectrum light-harvesting matrices and integration with smart construction materials, providing frameworks for next-generation green infrastructure.
