BODIPY Derivatives in Organic Optoelectronic Devices: Structural Influence on Absorption, Emission, Efficiency, and Stability

Abstract
High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide 4,4-Difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) derivatives continue to attract significant interest in organic optoelectronics due to their high photostability, structural tunability, and well-defined electronic properties. This work provides an updated perspective on how meso -, α-, and β-substitution patterns govern the electronic structure, excited-state behavior, and charge-transport characteristics in BODIPY frameworks, with particular emphasis on advances in which the BODIPY unit plays a critical role in the device performance. The discussion focuses on structure−property relationships relevant to both organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In OPVs, tailored substitution enables band-gap tuning, improves photocurrent generation, and enhances molecular ordering, while recent donor−acceptor and polymeric architectures highlight their potential as both donor and nonfullerene acceptor. In OLEDs, BODIPY remains a key platform for narrowband emission, supporting fluorescent, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and hyperfluorescent device designs. Despite progress, challenges remain in mechanistic understanding, excited-state characterization, and the development of multifunctional BODIPY systems capable of high performance across both OPV and OLED technologies. The convergence between OPV and OLED design strategies further supports the development of multifunctional BODIPY platforms for next-generation organic optoelectronic technologies.
