Potential biomedical application of calcium phosphates obtained using eggshells as a biosource of calcium at different initial pH values
Source abstract
Abstract
Polyphasic calcium phosphates (CaPs) were successfully synthesized using raw non calcined eggshells as a biosource of calcium via the low cost precipitation method. The obtained material composition varied depending on the initial pHo value. At the most acidic pH of 1.1, a biphasic material composed of DCPD (brushite) and OCP (octacalcium phosphate) was obtained. With the increasing pH, other forms of calcium phosphate with lower solubility appeared and the content of HA (hydroxyapatite) increased up to 68% at pHo 12.4. The initial pH value influenced also the morphology and shape of the obtained minerals. The calcium release profile in the commercial saline and the artificial saliva solutions depends on the material composition. After soaking in the artificial saliva the HA content increases while that of more soluble forms of calcium phosphates decreases. This makes the obtained materials promising bioresorbable agents enhancing enamel remineralization that can be used, for example, in toothpastes.
