Abstract

Abstract A Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ green emitting ceramic phosphor was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The phosphor exhibited good luminescence characteristics but possessed poor mechanical strength, which was probably caused by anisotropic thermal expansion due to the orthorhombic crystal structure of Ba2SiO4. To solve this problem, Ba2SiO4:Eu2+-silica composite and Ba2SiO4:Eu2+-spinel composite ceramic phosphors were fabricated. However, a large amount of impurity phases were generated in the composite phase ceramics. Then, a spinel/Ba2SiO4:Eu2+/spinel sandwich structure translucent ceramic phosphor was fabricated by SPS, which showed robust mechanical strength, acceptable transparency and high thermal conductivity. There was no severe chemical reaction at the interface between the spinel layer and the Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ layer. The ceramic phosphor has a broad emission band with a peak at 506 nm and can be excited by UV or blue LED/LD chips. The translucent spinel/Ba2SiO4:Eu2+/spinel ceramic was evaluated and has the potential to be a phosphor converting material for wLEDs and projectors.
