Abstract

Abstract Modified chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is highly desirable to achieve versatile synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) crystals with certain layer-number and configuration. In this study, we have demonstrated growth of MoS2 domains with diverse layer numbers through the pulsed-Ar-flow assisted CVD method utilizing Mo foil and Si/SiO2 substrate to construct confined reaction space. Layer number of obtained samples under varied time width of pulsed Ar flow is regulated from monolayer to multilayer (>3). Thickness evolution may be derived from the manipulation of on-time width of pulsed Ar gas. Our result provides an optional strategy to synthesize other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) crystals with desired configurations.
