Abstract

Abstract Biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics, containing hydroxylapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate, subjected to prolonged high energy dry milling was studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy combined with thermal analysis. Structural changes of hydroxylapatite and isomorphic carbonate incorporation upon high energy milling for 20, 60 and 100 h were monitored. It has been established that continuous milling in an air environment leads to carbonate groups incorporation in apatite. Also, from the infrared and Raman spectra it can be determined that the degree of carbonate ion substitution in both structural positions (A-type and B-type) of hydroxylapatite increases with time of milling simultaneously with a reduction in the degree of hydroxylation of apatite.
