Abstract

Abstract B 4 C and B 4 C–W 2 B 5 composite ceramics are prepared via hot pressing. The composition and microstructure of the ceramics are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Their electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient are measured from room temperature up to 1500 K. These results show that the values of electrical conductivity for the B 4 C–W 2 B 5 composite ceramic are much higher than that for the B 4 C ceramic, but that the values of the Seebeck coefficient for the composite ceramic are somewhat lower than that for the B 4 C ceramic. Both electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient increase with increasing temperature. The figure of merit of the composite ceramic is higher than that of the B 4 C ceramic, though the thermal conductivity of the B 4 C ceramic is somewhat lower than that of the composite ceramic. The reason for the enhancement in the figure of merit of the composite ceramic is discussed.
