Abstract

Abstract In this study, the corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance of ScxTa0.5−xYSZ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.25, 0.45, and 0.5 mol%) coatings prepared via the solid-state reaction method were compared and evaluated. The corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance of different materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and stereomicroscopy. Results show that Sc0.25Ta0.25YSZ has the best corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance among all tested materials and the number of thermal cycles exceeds 679 at 1150 °C. The excellent properties can be attributed to the small ionic radius of Sc3+ in the Sc0.25Ta0.25YSZ composite, which gives the material good thermal stability at high temperatures. In the corrosion process, Sc0.25Ta0.25YSZ forms highly stable zirconia tantalum, affording good corrosion resistance.
