Abstract

Abstract In the present study, phase-pure spinel-type oxides ZnxCu1-xBi2O4 and MgxCu1-xBi2O4 (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.09, and 0.15) were successfully synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal method. The structural, optical properties and morphology of Zn/Mg-substituted samples were measured using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-effect scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The photocatalytic activity of the photo-catalysts was tested for the removal of three toxic dyes (i.e., rhodamine B, malachite green, and red oxide) in aqueous solution under solar condition. In addition, the effects of three operational parameters including irradiation time, the catalyst amount, and pH on the degradation efficiency of the products were studied. Based on the obtained results, all the Zn/Mg-substituted samples exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to pure nano-sized Cu0.85Bi2O4 and Mg0.15Cu0.85Bi2O4.
