Abstract

The mechanism of bubble formation was revealed by recording pulsed laser welding with a high-speed camera and then observing the change of bubbles in the melt pool. The research shows thermal shock simultaneously produces two pressure waves and forms a negative pressure zone. When the pressure reaches a critical value, the negative pressure zone of the welding pool produces bubbles. The size of the bubble in the weld pool varies with the laser power. Some bubbles burst and disappeared, because the radius size reached the critical value, and some became pores after solidification in the molten pool. In addition, there are cavities inside the melt pool under the effect of thermal shock, and these cavities will become pores after the solidification of the melt pool.
