A high-temperature high-salinity and high-shear resistant fracturing fluid thickener based on non-covalent enhancement mechanism
Source abstract
Abstract
To enhance the resistance of acrylamide (AM)-based polymer thickeners in harsh reservoir environments, modifications are necessary to address the insufficient strength of molecular chains. Inspired by the non-covalent enhancement mechanism, we introduce N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA), which bears dual amide groups in a single side chain, to strengthen the hydrogen-bonding interactions. Here, we report a supramolecular thickener based on a binary copolymer of NAGA and AM. The synthesized polymer (PNAGA-AM) forms a denser network structure through highly ordered multiple hydrogen bonds at a relatively low molecular weight (Mn = 778,400 g/mol), thereby enhancing the strength and stability of polymer chains. The PNAGA-AM system exhibits significantly improved resistance to severe downhole conditions, including high temperature, high salinity, and high shear. Overall, the PNAGA-AM system can maintain excellent rheological properties under harsh downhole environments, providing important technical support for the development of high-performance fracturing fluid thickeners.
