Ultra-wide-temperature-range thermal self-responsive phase-change materials for lithium battery thermal management
Source abstract
Abstract
Phase-change materials (PCMs) have shown great potential in the thermal management (TM) of lithium batteries (LBs), but they still face significant challenges in independently managing TM over an ultra-wide temperature range (UWTR) from low temperatures to thermal runaway (TR). This work prepares PCM-EGx@SEBS with a UWTR and differential thermal response by regulating the ordered assembly of large-sized EGs, micro-migration of nodal PCMs, and thermal reconstruction of the SEBS skeleton. PCM-EG10@SEBS exhibited an average preheat rate of 21.94°C/min during the preheating phase and an ultra-high temperature drop of 18.8°C during normal operation. In addition, PCM-EG10@SEBS delays the internal triggering TR time to 307.79% of the foam group, and when TR is triggered externally, the temperature drops by 323.8°C, and the thermal safety switch formed by cracking delays the secondary TR triggering time to 258.82% of the foam group. This study improves the adaptability and safety of LBs in a UWTR.
