Optimisation of freeze resistance in high-performance concrete: Synergistic effects of polypropylene fibres, basalt fibres, fly ash and silica fume
Source abstract
Abstract
To address the issue of reduced mechanical properties in high-performance concrete due to frost resistance, this study employed basalt fibres (BF) and polypropylene fibres (PPF) at different volume contents (0.1%, 0.15% and 0.2%) and (0.1%, 0.15% and 0.2%), alongside 15% fly ash (FA) and 10% silica fume (SF). This study employed a combined macro- and micro-level research methodology to systematically investigate the evolution patterns and enhancement mechanisms of the mechanical properties of high-performance concrete. Besides, nondestructive tests, including resonant frequency test and piezoelectric damage monitoring test, were employed to verify the frost resistance of specimen. Among the limited set of specimens subjected to freeze-thaw testing, the mixture containing FA, SF, 0.15% BF, and 0.1% PPF showed relatively better frost resistance. Furthermore, quadratic equations were utilized to predict freeze-thaw (F-T) damage, establishing analytical expressions for the relationships between fiber content, F-T cycles, damage index (DI), and load, which aligned well with the experimental results. This research provided experimental and theoretical foundation for the extensive application of fiber reinforced high performance concrete (HPC) in cold environments.
