Electrochemical-structural evolution and formation mechanism of the passive film on carbon steel in simulated concrete pore solution
Source abstract
Abstract
The passive film that forms on carbon steel in concrete prolongs its overall service life, but the complete formation mechanism and the relationship between its electrochemical behaviour and structure remain unclear. In this study, carbon steel was passivated for different durations by immersion in a simulated concrete pore solution. The formation mechanism was investigated by correlating the evolution of the passive film’s protective performance, porosity, thickness, composition, and mass over time. Results showed that the passive film was thick but porous during the first 12 h of passivation, during which hydroxide dehydration and pore elimination occurred, causing its thickness to decrease from 10.8 nm at 1 h to 5.4 nm at 12 h and then remain stable. After 96 h, the donor concentration reached a constant value, indicating complete passivation and resulting in an average mass loss of 1018.5 ng/cm 2 for the steel. Throughout all stages, the passive film formed in the concrete environment exhibited a stratified structure of FeO, Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe(OH) 3 layers from the inside out, along with Ca/Fe-OH − -LDH by-products on the surface.
