Pit morphology-based fatigue crack initiation life assessment for marine structures
Source abstract
Abstract
Accurate and rapid assessment of the fatigue life of marine structures affected by pitting corrosion is crucial for ensuring the safe operation of marine. This paper proposes a theoretical mapping model based on pit morphology parameters and develops a numerical method based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM). The study quantifies pit morphology by considering multi-factors such as sizes, shapes, irregularity and spacing between pits. A power-law theoretical mapping model is developed to correlate pit morphology parameters with fatigue crack initiation life. The developed numerical model can quickly extract the required parameters for the theoretical mapping model. The study presents combined morphology parameters and finds that the shape and irregularity of the pit have a significant impact on the fatigue life of marine structures. Pit merging poses a substantial risk, which should be circumvented by timely intervention. These findings offer innovative insights into quickly analyzing fatigue performance of components and provide the reliable assessment of fatigue life for marine structures.
