Particle packing approach for maximizing the usage potential of recycled aggregates in mortars and concretes

Harshkumar V. Annigeri, Subhash C. Yaragal

Abstract

Concrete is the most, widely used construction material. Rapid depletion of raw materials, demands the use of recycled fine and coarse aggregates (RFA and RCA) from construction and demolition waste (CDW) not only mitigates resource depletion, but also addresses CO 2 emissions and landfill issues. This study utilises the compressible packing model (CPM) for the design of recycled aggregate based mortars and concretes, with optimized packing. CPM based mortars, with packing density (PD) of 0.76, exhibits low flow and strengths of 23 and 22 MPa, and further, a PD of 0.65 results in desired flow and strengths of 32 and 31 MPa, at 0% and 100% RFA. Nominal mortars (NM) 1:3, with a PD of 0.85, results in desired flow and strengths of 45 and 43 MPa at 0% and 100% RFA. Concretes with PD of 0.75 gave, strength higher than those produced using the Indian Standard (IS) method. Mortars and concretes with 100% RFA and/or 100% RCA, having a constant PD, achieved comparable strengths. ECO 2-eq emissions of recycled mortars and concretes, are lower than those of, nominal mortar mixes and concretes, designed in accordance with IS. Adopting CPM based approach, not only maximizes the use of RFA and RCA in mortars and concretes, signifying substantial virgin aggregates savings and also cement. Considering strength and durability indices, the study recommends using 50% RFA for mortars and a combination of 50% RFA and 50% RCA for concretes.
