Rehabilitation of the second and third spans of the steel frame of Mosul's Second Bridge
Source abstract
Abstract
Mosul's Second Bridge rehabilitation added significant life to the infrastructure component in Mosul City. The composite steel-concrete bridge rehabilitation process of the second and the third spans required the moving of the steel girder to adjust the dislocation. An experimental laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the most appropriate method to support, lift and move the spans. A numerical analysis was also conducted to investigate the actual behavior of the steel beam under concentrated loads compared with the experimental results. The numerical investigation shows that the ANSYS program model agrees well with the experiments. The experimental results showed that the lateral displacement was more significant than the deflection if no vertical stiffeners were available. The numerical results showed that a stress concentration appeared at line supports and lesser stresses appeared with square plate support. It was concluded that using a square pad is better than the roller supports and prevents local buckling.
