Construction process optimisation of graphene-basalt fibre asphalt mixtures

Abstract

Graphene-basalt fibre asphalt mixture (GBFAM) is a novel composite-modified material. However, there is currently a lack of an effective basis for selecting appropriate construction processes and parameters in practical engineering applications. To accelerate the promotion and application of GBFAM in pavement engineering and ensure construction quality and performance, the optimal mixing process was first investigated based on asphalt mixture design, utilising freeze-thaw splitting tests, Marshall tests, and low-temperature beam bending tests. Next, the optimal construction temperature control parameters were analysed through road performance tests and the response surface method (RSM). Finally, the storage and curing conditions were evaluated using the Marshall test. The results indicate that optimising the construction temperature control parameters of GBFAM using RSM is feasible. The mixing process has little effect on the road performance indicators and volume parameters of GBFAM. However, if the storage temperature of GBFAM is too high or the retention time is too long after mixing, its Marshall test technical indicators deteriorate. Marshall stability decreases with increasing construction and curing environment temperatures and increases with extended curing time. GBFAM should not be used under natural climate conditions below 5 ℃. During construction, asphalt should be added after the aggregate and basalt fibre are uniformly mixed, followed by the addition of the uniformly mixed graphene and mineral powder mixture. The construction processes and parameters such as the mixing method, construction temperature control parameters, retention time, and traffic opening time after construction as determined in this study can provide a theoretical foundation and reference for the mixing, transportation, paving, compaction, and traffic opening processes associated with GBFAM. This is of great value for promoting the application of GBFAM in pavement engineering and ensuring its quality.
