Mechanically activated shell powder modified asphalt and its aging resistance enhancement
Source abstract
Abstract
The accumulation of shell stacking can lead to significant environmental issues and resource waste. It is necessary to find disposal rational ways of accumulating natural waste with shell powder. Shell powder as biomass could achieve sustainable preparation of modified asphalt and greatly alleviate the pressure of petroleum asphalt sources. The advantage of this modified asphalt was that shell powder as natural resources had a wide range of sources and were renewable and ideal biomass materials. Shell powder were common products of carbon dioxide through biological fixation, and it made it excellent candidates for the preparation of low-carbon modified asphalt. The performance of modified asphalt is influenced by the compatibility and dispersion issues between shell powder and asphalt. This work used original shell-milled powders (OSM) and sunflower seed oil (SO) to prepare modified shell powder (SSOM) by liquid-phase grinding method. Then, SSOM and polyolefin elastomer (POE) were composite modified in further steps to obtain SPSC, and modified asphalt (SPSC-SA) was prepared by hot mixing asphalt with SPSC. By analyzing and characterization, this technique was able to refine SSOM and crosslinking polymer, strengthen the chemical bonding and anchoring force between SPSC and asphalt, and enhance the deformation resistance and colloidal stability of SPSC-SA. After long-term and ultraviolet aging, the change rate for carbonyl content in SPSC-SA is the lowest, respectively at 29.22 % and 27.96 %. After ageing, SPSC-SA's hardness, modulus, and maximum depth decrease the most, respectively, with 6.71 %, 5.72 %, and 4.65 % in short-term, 5.72 %, 3.14 %, and 3.29 % in long-term, and 3.96 %, 4.66 %, and 3.28 % in ultraviolet. The preparation of bio asphalt from biomass materials is proposed as a new method that has a significant impact on carbon dioxide storage. Biomass modified asphalt had good application prospects in road and other engineering projects, and it was expected to expand the design and preparation methods of low-carbon and high-durability asphalt roads.
