Investigation of the hydrothermally altered K-feldspar use in slag-based alkali-activated binders
Source abstract
Abstract
Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are considered a low-carbon binder and a promising alternative to Portland cement, with both performance and environmental benefits. Exploring novel precursors is essential for advancing AAM technology, particularly given the limited availability of conventional precursors. Current research should focus not only on addressing this challenge but also on investigating alternative, less-common precursors that could offer enhanced performance benefits for AAMs. This paper explores the use of nano-structured, hydrothermally altered K-feldspar, known as a multi-phase material (MPM), as a precursor in alkali-activated systems based on ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Two alkali dosages (6 % and 10 % Na 2 O) were tested, and the effects on workability, reaction kinetics, compressive strength, and microstructural phase formation (FTIR and TG/DTG) were analyzed. Results showed that higher alkali dosages reduced reactivity and workability of the pastes. However, MPM incorporation enhanced the performance of mixtures with lower alkali dosages by promoting a higher aluminosilicate gel formation according to TG/DTG results. The isothermal calorimetry test also indicated that the incorporation of MPM in low-alkali systems are not detrimental to the overall mixture reactivity. A potential application of MPM as an activation enhancer due to its significant potassium content was also discussed in this paper based on the obtained results.
