Abstract

High shrinkage and uncontrollable mix design of alkali-activated recycled mortar (AARM) limited the applicability in the construction area, primarily due to the rapid early hydration. In this study, waste wood powder was introduced in the AARM to investigate shrinkage and mechanical strength, considering different binder-to-sand ratios, alkali concentrations, and wood powder content in the mix design. The experimental results show that the compressive strength of AARM decreases by 55 % when the content of wood powder reaches 6 %, but it is still better than that of sample prepared with sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Additionally, the inclusion of wood powder significantly reduces the shrinkage of AARM, with a 31.8 % reduction observed as the wood powder reaches 6 %. In conclusion, the use of waste wood powder provides a great potential and a theoretical foundation for AARM, effectively reducing shrinkage while enhancing mechanical strength.
