Effects of upper-stress limit and stress range on fatigue performance of a novel thermoplastic glass fiber reinforced polypropylene bar: Experimental investigation and fatigue life model
Source abstract
Abstract
Thermoplastic glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GFRPP) bars, compared with traditional thermosetting GFRP bars, demonstrate superior advantages including post-forming thermal processability and recyclability. To elucidate the fatigue characteristics of GFRPP bars, fatigue performance tests on 21 GFRPP specimens under combined conditions of various upper-stress limits and stress ranges were conducted. Macro-failure modes and micro-failure mechanisms were first investigated. In addition, the stiffness degradation characteristics of GFRPP bars during fatigue damage evolution and the final fatigue life were analyzed, and fatigue life prediction models were established. Results revealed two distinct failure modes: 1) delamination and loose filament dominated by fiber-resin interfacial fatigue damage propagation, and 2) concentrated regional fracture controlled by fiber fatigue fracture extension. Failure modes were mainly determined by the upper stress limit. When the upper-stress limit was lower than 0.3 σ ult , the specimens experienced fiber fatigue fracture damage. Both upper-stress limit and stress range significantly affected fatigue life.
