Case study on lifecycle CO2 assessment of recycled aggregate concrete
Source abstract
Abstract
This study evaluates the CO 2 footprints of recycled aggregate concrete by applying both upper and lower CO 2 inventory values of recycled aggregates within the lifecycle assessment methodology outlined in the ISO 14040 series. The impact of recycled aggregates on the CO 2 footprint of structural concrete–calculated within a system boundary extending from cradle to concrete production–is analyzed using a comprehensive database encompassing 618 laboratory-tested concrete mixes. The binder intensity and CO 2 intensity indicators of recycled aggregate concrete mixtures are compared to those of conventional concrete. A review of the CO 2 inventory data for recycled aggregates reveals significant inconsistencies, largely due to the lack of reliable considerations for material quality, manufacturing processes, and production facilities. Consequently, an unexpectedly high increase in the CO 2 footprint is observed for recycled aggregate concrete compared to conventional concrete. However, this impact can be mitigated through partial replacement strategies and optimized mix designs. The proposed CO 2 intensity indicators offer valuable insights for promoting sustainable practices by enabling a straightforward assessment of the upper and lower CO 2 footprints of recycled aggregate concrete.
