Abstract

Reinforcement corrosion is the main reason for concrete structure damage, which leads to many structural disasters and substantial economic losses. Due to its simple, economical and efficient construction, the migrating corrosion inhibitor (MCI) or permeable corrosion inhibitor (PCI) has become a popular method for repairing damaged reinforced concrete structures. However, optimizing the molecular and compositions design of PCI, improving its permeability in concrete, and enhancing its corrosion resistance of concrete structure in service are still urgent problems. In this paper, the definition, molecular design principles, development history and application of PCI are reviewed, the methods to evaluate the corrosion resistance of PCI surface applied on reinforced concrete in laboratory and practical engineering are proposed, the corrosion resistance and transport mechanism of PCI in concrete are discussed, and the models to predict the corrosion resistance and transport performance of different PCI in reinforced concrete are established. The paper aims to better understanding the mechanism of enhancing the durability of damaged reinforced concrete structures by applying PCI on the surface of reinforced concrete and promote the widespread application of PCI in the upcoming wave of restoration of old concrete structures in service.
