Abstract

Self-sensing cementitious material attracted extensive attention in non-destructive testing (NDT) of construction. Developing a self-sensing high-strength grout (SHSG) has a great competition in NDT of prefabricated-construction connection. However, current literature lack comprehensive details regarding its preparation and properties. This study systematically evaluate the hybrid effects of carbon black (CB) and micro steel fiber (MSF), two cheap fillers, on the properties and sensing capacity of grout. The results revealed that the maximum permissible limit of 0.4 vol% CB and 0.1 vol% MSF + 0.4 vol% CB is proposed for necessary fluidity and expansion demand for given 0.24 w/b ratio. The introduction of those fillers enhanced the compressive and flexural strength by 14.0–16.0 %, while also significantly improving electrical conductivity and stress sensitivity. The maximum fractional change in resistance (FCR) of 33.68 % under 18.75 MPa is observed. A SHSG is of ideal stress sensitivity and an acceptable fluidity and expansion rate is developed, which is expected to contribute to the future development of NDT of prefabricated construction. • A self-sensing high strength grout is developed, which could be used in NDT of prefabricated construction connections. • Hybrid of CB and MSF improved load sensitivity and repeatability, a FCR of 33.68 % under 18.75 MPa is observed. • The ionic, tunneling and contacting conduction of SHSG are discussed.
