Strengthening of axially loaded RC columns using FRP with inorganic binder: A review on engineered geopolymer composites (EGC)

Abstract

Low-cost, limited, environmentally friendly materials are essential for civil engineering to survive severe loading and severe environmental conditions. Advanced composite materials are increasingly being used as reinforcement for various constructions, including new construction and restoration. To upgrade and rehabilitate the structures, an externally bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) system is found to be effective for the retrofit of the structures. Low weight, strong tensile strength, resistance to deterioration, and simplicity of installation render these popular choices for enhancing the structural integrity of reinforced concrete building components. The performance of the retrofitted infrastructure systems using FRP and organic-based binders under fire is questionable. Fiber-based engineered geopolymer composites (FEGC) have been the subject of increased study in recent years and offer promising potential substitutes for organic binders under extreme load cases. This study aims to provide thorough knowledge regarding the functional strengthening of axially loaded column members utilizing FRP and an inorganic bonding agent under typical practical circumstances.
