Alkali-activated steel slag-coal gangue cementitious materials: Strength, hydration, and heavy metal immobilization
Source abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the application of steel slag (SS) as a calcium source in coal gangue (CG), exploring its hydration mechanism as an alkali-activated cementitious material and its leaching properties for heavy metals. Through XRD, FTIR, MIP, SEM, and heavy metal leaching tests, we analyzed the hydration products, mechanical properties, and leaching characteristics. Results indicate that the composite material (CGSS) exhibits significantly superior mechanical performance compared to pure CG. The compressive strength reaches its peak at 20% SS content and 9% sodium silicate addition. The strength of CGSS correlates closely with porosity and the proportion of 0.01-10μm pores, with the primary reaction product being C-(N)-A-S-H gel. Increased sodium silicate enhances microstructural optimization of the cementitious material while effectively reducing porosity. Additionally, CGSS effectively encapsulates heavy metal particles, achieving concentrations compliant with environmental standards, demonstrating its potential for waste treatment and resource recovery.
