Abstract

EnglishFrom the observed fact that all manganese oxides, including the compounds with volatile anion, change to manganous manganite when heated above 940° C, we arrive to the conclusion that in the silicate glasses obtained by melting, Mn^+ can not exist but Mn^+ and Mn^+ do exist jointly combined in the stoichiometric proportions as required by the manganous manganite formula MnoJ+Mn^+04, Mn^+ being in four fold co-ordination and acting as a vitreous networh-former together with the silica. The chromophore group is Mn^+04 that can either exist in ortho position {Mn04y*~ in the soda glasses and gives purple coloration, or in meta position (MnOsY^ in the potash glasses and then produces blue coloration-, position's change that is produced by electropolarisation due to the big K+ ion. The manganous manganite appears in a redox equilibrium with the Mn°, obtained when the melting is made under the influence of a reducing agent as arsenic or antimony.
