Abstract
EnglishParticles, 30 - 50 p-m, of pure zirconia and with various additions were melted in a plasma-jet, severely quenched by spraying on a cold metal plate, and then investigated by x-ray methods at room temperature. Whereas the pure zirconia gives only the monoclinic crystal form, that means no quenching modification was observed, the effect of the additions of SIO2, AI2O3 and ZrN is to produce a tetragonal hightemperature form of zirconia. The additions promote the formation of very fine crystallites, and the great surface of these results in a high total energy sufficient for the formation of the tetragonal higher-energy modification. During annealing of quenched specimens the cri/stallites grow to the maximum crystal size of the tetragonal modification, this maximum being dependent on the boundary-^aurface energy of the given system. If the maximum size is exceeded, the lower-energy monoclinic modification results. In the system ZrO^-Al^Oa a region ivas found in which the quenched specimens are vitreous. The density, refraction, and crystalUsation behaviour during annealing of such glasses were studied in function of their composition. In view of their applications metal coatings, the important properties such as thermal expansion resistance against corrosive gases and liquids thermal shock and abrasion, were investigated in these glasses, and compared with the analogous properties of no-vitreous coatings. The vitreous coatings have shoivn a better protection effect.
