Cristobalita en arcillas: Su significad o genético y tecnológico

Ian Knizek

Abstract

EnglishA Mexican kaolin clay of hydrothermal origin, containing about 38 % cristobalite is described and discussed. The occurrences of cristo-balite in clay in general are discussed and the literature dealing with its genesis and synthesis reviewed. The conclusions reached point towards the tentative proposition that the physical state of the parent rock {i.e. whether glassy or crystalline) may be important in determining the form of silica to develop during the argillization. In the second part of the paper the literature dealing with the effect of cristobalite in semi-vitreous, vitreous china and european hard porcelain type bodies is reviewed and discussed. The importance of the cristobalite expansion on the properties of bodies is stressed. Finally, the results obtained laith a semi-vitreous, quartz-free body, prepared with the cristohalitic clay previously discussed, are given. Its thermal expansion, and crazing resistance as well as all the remaining physical properties were highly satisfactory. There are 9 figures and 50 references.
