Application of piezoelectric materials for echographic transducers: The modelling problem
Source abstract
Abstract
Using the classical mono dimensional MasonSitting model —specialized for the geometry usually used for the piezoceramic elements— some new results for matching layers optimization and spurious echo reduction are presented the limits of the Mason-Sitting approaching pointed out typical piezoelectric element which is essentially a two dimensional structure. In order to overcome these limits and to have a better representation of the behavior of the piezoelectric structure, an approximate solution of the two coupled differential wave equations has been founded which fully describes the bounded piezoelectric plate in the two dominant dimensions. A mathematical model which considers the piezoelectric element as a 5 two-pole with 4 input/output mechanical ports and one electrical port has been implemented. Matching layers, backing, inert material which usually fiUs the gaps between the elements, can be easily described with the same approach obtaining an overall description of the multi element transducer, able to predict ist most important characteristics, such as impedance, bandwidth, coupling between the elements, etc
