Abstract
However, in the Zr02 composition series it was not possible to obtain homogeneous glasses containing more than 12 inol% Zr02. The hydrolitic resistance and the chemical attack by alkali solutions were studied. The hydrolitic resistance increases when SIO2 is substituted by Zr02 and/or TIO2. The addition of B2O3 produces in both cases an additional increase on hydrolitic resistance. Conversely, the alkali resistance, which increases normally with Zr02 addition, is lowered with TIO2 and/or B2O3 incorporation. The SIO2, B2O3 and Zr02 leaching in alkaline solutions increases linearly versus time. The maximun leaching of these oxides corresponds to the SIO2 and the minimum to the Zr02. The Zr02 addition produces a stabilization of the glass structure, decreasing the relative leaching of another network forming oxides. The favourable effect of ZrOj is due to the surface formation of a Zr02 hydrated layer which is insoluble in an alkaline medium.
