Abstract

The synthesis has been carried out by solid state reaction from lithium carbonate and silica. The reaction rate has been determined by X-ray diffraction with standard curves of lithium carbonate metasilicate, disilicate and orthosilicate. The formation of the orthosilicate takes place by a subsequent reaction being the intermediate product the lithium metasilicate. The influence of the silica on the reaction kinetics has been studied by isothermal thermogravimetry. The activation energy determined by this method was in the 130-190 kj/mol range. With respect the sintering process, the lithium orthosilicate obtained from silica gel gives better results than the obtained from quartz, giving rises to materials with porosities between 10-25%, which can be useful as breeder for nuclear fusion
