Abstract

EnglishThe mineralogical constitution and the thermal behaviour of the serpentine from Moeche (La Coruna), have been the object of previous investigations. According to that work, the most active mine-ralizers for forsterite formation are: B0O3, and P2O3. In the present paper, results are given on the formation of forsterite by thermal treatment of mixtures of serpentine and magnesite with or without additions of mineraiizers (up to 6 %)- The selected batches have been fired to 1.400o and 1500oC. By using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques it has been shown that maximum yield of forsterite is attained when 25 % of magnesite is present in the mixture. On the other hand, it has been also observed that the yield of forsterite does not improve any further when amounts higher than 1-2 % of B,Os or PoO, are added. The effectiveness of the above additions is not important. The B0O3 is more active than the P2O5. A new compound has been observed by electron microscopy which is likeli to be magnesio-wustite.
