3D Printing and the U.S. Postal Service

United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General

Abstract

Abstract On July 7, 2014, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General released a white paper examining how 3D printing could lead to an increase in the number of packages shipped by the Postal Service, as well as substantial new annual revenue from these shipments. Due to the lightweight nature of most consumer 3D-printed goods and the ubiquity of the nationwide postal network, the Postal Service could play an important role in connecting 3D printing businesses to customers. As the industry grows, the Postal Service could consider establishing partnerships with 3D printing businesses, including locating their printing activities at or near shipping nodes.
